How to convert JPG to PNG

JPG versus PNG: lossless formats and transparency support
JPG and PNG are both widely used image formats, but they were designed for different types of images and different priorities. JPG was created to store photographic images as compactly as possible. It achieves small file sizes by analyzing the image and discarding color information that the human visual system is unlikely to notice, particularly in areas with complex textures and gradients. This is known as lossy compression. The trade-off is that every time you save a JPG, a small amount of quality is permanently lost. If you open a JPG, make a small change, and save it again, the resulting file will have slightly more artifacts than the previous version.
PNG was created specifically as a lossless alternative for the web. Every pixel is stored exactly, with no quality degradation during compression or decompression. This makes PNG ideal for images that need to remain pixel-perfect through multiple rounds of editing, such as screenshots, user interface graphics, diagrams, and illustrations. PNG also supports an alpha channel, which allows individual pixels to carry transparency information. This capability is entirely absent from JPG. An image with a transparent background can only be stored as a PNG (or GIF, or WebP), not as a JPG.
Converting from JPG to PNG is a lossless operation in the sense that the PNG faithfully captures the current state of the JPG, including any compression artifacts already present. It does not restore quality that was lost during the original JPG save. What it does do is create a stable snapshot that can be edited, resaved, and distributed without any further quality loss. This is the primary reason professional workflows often convert working files to PNG before making edits, even when the source was originally a JPG from a camera.
How background removal works in transparency mode
The transparency mode in the JPG to PNG converter works by identifying pixels in the image that match or closely approximate a target background color and replacing those pixels with fully transparent pixels in the output PNG. The process begins with the background color you specify, either by clicking on the image to sample it or by entering a hex color code directly. The tool then compares every pixel in the image against this target color and determines whether each pixel should be kept or made transparent.
The tolerance slider controls the boundary of this comparison. At zero tolerance, only pixels that are an exact match to the target color are made transparent. This can result in a rough, jagged edge around the subject because real-world images rarely have perfectly uniform backgrounds. Even a white background in a photograph will have slight color variation due to shadows, lighting gradients, and JPEG compression artifacts. Increasing the tolerance extends the range of colors that qualify for removal, which produces smoother edges but also risks removing pixels that belong to the subject if those pixels are a similar color to the background.
The best results come from images that were captured or created with a clean, uniform background in mind. Studio product photography against a white sweep, headshots taken in front of a solid backdrop, and graphics exported from design tools with a flat background all respond well to automated background removal. For images with complex backgrounds, multiple background colors, or subjects that blend into the background, a dedicated image editing tool with AI-assisted background removal will produce better results than color-tolerance-based detection.
Use cases for JPG to PNG conversion
The most common use case for converting JPG to PNG in web design is creating transparent versions of images for use as overlays, cutouts, and composited graphics. A product photo shot on a white background, for example, can be converted to a transparent PNG so it can be placed on any colored background in a layout without a visible white rectangle surrounding it. This gives designers flexibility to use the same base image across different sections of a website with different background colors. E-commerce stores, marketing landing pages, and digital catalogs all rely heavily on transparent product PNGs for this reason.
Logos present another frequent scenario. Many companies receive their logo as a JPG because that is what was available at the time, but the logo needs to appear on dark backgrounds, colored headers, and a variety of marketing materials. Converting the JPG logo to a transparent PNG by removing the white background makes it usable across all of those contexts without any white fringe. The same logic applies to signature images, icons that need to appear on multiple backgrounds, and profile photos intended for overlay use in presentation templates or video production.
Edge refinement and when background removal works best
The tolerance control is the primary tool for refining the boundary between the subject and the transparent background. A tolerance that is too low leaves a faint halo of background color around the edges of the subject, visible especially on dark placements where a near-white fringe stands out. A tolerance that is too high begins to eat into the edges of the subject itself, particularly if the subject contains light colors or is photographed with soft shadows that blend gradually into the background.
The images that respond best to color-tolerance-based background removal are those with a high-contrast boundary between subject and background, a uniform single-color background with minimal variation, and a subject that does not contain any colors close to the background color. A dark product on a white background, a colored logo on a white background, or a person in a brightly colored outfit against a solid blue backdrop are all good candidates. Images with fine detail at the edges, such as hair, fur, or wispy fabric, benefit from the live preview feature, which lets you dial in the tolerance and see the result before committing to the download.
Your images never leave your device
All JPG to PNG conversion and background removal processing happens entirely inside your browser. The tool uses the HTML5 Canvas API and runs on your local device without sending any image data to a server. Your files are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted over the internet.
