How to Rename an Image
Renaming an image is different from editing an image.
If you have a file named IMG_4837.jpg, you can rename it to vacation-beach.jpgwithout changing the photo's pixels, dimensions, quality, or visual content.
This image renaming tool lets you rename supported JPG and PNG files directly in your browser. Select an image, enter the filename you want, and download the renamed image.
You can use descriptive filenames for photos, screenshots, product images, website graphics, documents converted to images, and other JPG or PNG files.
What Is an Image Renamer?
An image renamer is a tool that changes the filename of an image without requiring you to edit the image itself.
For example: IMG_20260809.jpg can become product-photo-blue-shirt.jpg.
Or: screenshot_001.png can become homepage-mobile-navigation.png.
The image content remains separate from its filename. Renaming the file does not automatically crop, resize, compress, recolor, or otherwise edit the image.
An image renamer can therefore be useful when you have many images with automatically generated filenames that are difficult to identify.
Rename JPG and PNG Images
This tool is designed for common image file types including JPG and PNG.
Rename JPG files
You can rename a JPG image from a generic filename such as DSC_1234.jpg to a descriptive filename such as family-photo-2026.jpg. If you need to manipulate PDF files as well, check out our PDF Renamer.
Rename PNG files
You can rename PNG images from filenames such as Screenshot_2026-08-09.png to website-dashboard.png.
The file extension remains .jpg or .png. Renaming an image does not convert it from one format to another.
How to Rename Images Online
- Select your image: Choose the JPG or PNG file you want to rename.
- Enter a new filename: Type the descriptive name you want to use for the image (e.g., homepage-hero-image). Select .jpg or .png as the extension.
- Rename the image: Click the rename button to assemble the file in your browser.
- Download the renamed image: Save your renamed JPG or PNG file to your device.
Why Rename Image Files?
Images often receive filenames automatically from cameras, phones, screenshots, design software, websites, or operating systems.
Those filenames may look like IMG_2847.jpg, DSC00982.jpg, Screenshot_2026-08-09.png, or image_938472.png.
These names may be difficult to understand when you have hundreds or thousands of images. A descriptive filename makes it easier to identify files without opening each image.
For example, DSC00982.jpg does not tell you much, whereas new-york-city-skyline.jpg immediately communicates what the image represents.
Renaming images can help with:
Photo organization
Group family, vacation, and travel photos by event, date, or location.
Website image organization
Organize asset folders cleanly for developers and content managers.
Product photography
Label e-commerce product photos by SKU, color, or view angle.
Screenshot organization
Give clear names to interface captures, bugs, and audit evidence.
Social media assets
Keep marketing banners, thumbnails, and posts organized.
Personal photo collections
Search and retrieve specific memories without opening every file.
How Should I Name an Image File?
A useful image filename should describe the image clearly while remaining reasonably short.
For example, blue-running-shoes.jpg is more useful than IMG_49382.jpg.
- Website image:
macrotoolkit-pdf-renamer-tool.png - Product image:
black-leather-office-chair.jpg - Photograph:
new-york-skyline-sunset.jpg - Screenshot:
pdf-renamer-upload-screen.png
A practical filename can contain information such as the subject, product, project, location, date, or version.

Does Renaming an Image Change the Image?
No. Renaming an image file does not inherently change the image itself.
For example, changing IMG_1234.jpg to family-photo.jpg does not change the pixels contained in the image. It does not automatically resize, crop, recompress, or alter the file dimensions.
Does Renaming a JPG or PNG Change Its Quality?
No. Changing the filename of a JPG or PNG does not inherently change its image quality or pixel data. If you actually need format conversion between file types, you can use our JPG to PNG Converter or PNG to JPG Converter.
Rename Images Without Changing the Extension
The file extension identifies the image format. A JPG normally uses .jpg and a PNG normally uses .png. Renaming photo.jpg to vacation.jpg changes the filename while keeping the JPG format.
How to Rename Images on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android
Windows: Open File Explorer, select the image, choose Rename (or press F2), enter the new name, and press Enter.
Mac: Locate the image in Finder, select the filename, press Return, type the new name, and press Return.
iPhone & Android: Use the native Files app or photos app file menu to edit the filename directly.
Image Renaming vs. Image Editing & Metadata
Renaming changes the file label (e.g., IMG_4837.jpg to beach-sunset.jpg). Image editing changes visual content (cropping, resizing, filtering). File renaming also leaves EXIF metadata intact.
