How to split a PDF

Page Selection Syntax Explained

The page selection input used by the extract selection mode follows a simple syntax that most people find intuitive after one use. Individual page numbers are separated by commas. Consecutive ranges are written with a hyphen between the start and end page numbers. You can combine both in a single expression. For example, the input 1,4,7-10,15 means: include page 1, include page 4, include pages 7 through 10 inclusive, and include page 15. The output PDF will contain those pages in that order: 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15. Spaces around the commas and hyphens are ignored, so you can format the expression however you find it easiest to read.

A few rules keep the input predictable. Page numbers start at 1, not 0. The end of a range must be greater than or equal to the start, so a range like 10-10 is valid and extracts a single page. Page numbers must not exceed the total page count of the loaded document. If a number is out of range the tool will show a validation error before attempting to split, so there is no risk of producing a corrupted or incomplete output file by entering an invalid number. No. The tool cannot read the content of an encrypted PDF. You must remove the password protection first using a PDF password removal tool, then load the unlocked file into the splitter. Once the password is cleared the tool will process the document normally.
